The Rosetta Stone in the British Museum

Egypt, Ptolemaic Period, 196 BCE

The inscriptions on the Rosetta Stone, apparently composed by the priests of Memphis, summarize benefactions conferred by Ptolemy V Epiphanes (205–180 BCE) and were written in the ninth year of his reign in commemoration of his accession to the throne. Inscribed in two languages, Egyptian and Greek, and three writing systems, hieroglyphics, demotic script (a cursive form of Egyptian hieroglyphics), and the Greek alphabet, it provided a key to the translation of Egyptian hieroglyphic writing.

Rabbi Berel Wein: Greek Influence and Jewish History

7/3/2009

Alexander the Great conquers the Persian Empire and most of the known world, and comes to the land of Israel at about 325 B.C.E.  He meets Simon the righteous, and is so impressed that he spares Jerusalem and the Temple.

The Jewish people remember Alexander and make a commitment that all the first born male children born during that year would be named after him. This is how the name becomes a common name in Jewish families.

Professor Donald Kagan - Twilight of the Polis - Part 2 - (cont.) and Conclusion (Yale University)

Introduction to Ancient Greek History (CLCV 205)

In this lecture, Professor Kagan tells the story of the rise of Philip and describes his early actions: unifying Macedon, defeating barbarian armies, and creating a new, professional, national army. According to Professor Kagan, through these actions, Philip was able to make inroads into the Greek world. What made these inroads more effective was Philip's uncanny talent for diplomacy and the fighting between the various poleis.

Introduction to Ancient Greek History (CLCV 205)

In this lecture, Professor Kagan describes the growth of a new power: Thebes. Under the leadership of Epaminondas and Pelopidas, Thebes grows into a major power among the Greek cities. In fact, the Thebans even rout the Spartans in a standard hoplite battle in the battle of Leuctra. Finally, Professor Kagan points out that by the time of Theban hegemony, the Greek world had experienced so many wars and conflicts that it opened the door to a powerful leader: Philip of Macedon.

Alexander III of Macedon was the son of Macedonian King Phillip II. Since his childhood Homer's heroic poems were favourite books of the heir of throne. And Alexander considered Achilles, the hero of the Trojan War, and mythical athlete Hercules as his idols.

Alexander the Great from Macedonia brought together the civilizations of Greece and Middle East and started the period known as the Hellenic Age.
